Our local school as per the BER website has received $3mil for construction of new classroom facilities. All the more difficult to understand why in the third week of school suddenly the number of Year 4, 5 and 6 classes are drastically reduced, and children have to be removed from classes, and shuffled around like a deck of cards.
Seems there is no consideration given to the academic performance of students, or past student acheivements, or friendships formed for students in Year 6 their last year of primary school. The only explanation given for reducing the number of Year 6 students in an enrichment class from 15 to 11, with Year 5 students making up the balance is “actually your child was in the top 15 but we have to make the numbers fit”, and “we know your daughter is a lovely child and should be able to cope better than some other children”.
Oh wonderful, the rewards of having a well behaved and intelligent child apparently according to the class re-organising committee are that they are easier to ignore without causing too much damage or fuss. If only sufficient thought, care and consideration was put into looking after the emotional well being of students whilst attending the school.
The education revolution should be more than just new buildings. How about some better building blocks for emotional intelligence for both the teachers and students.
