Action Replaay, silly can be good!!

Action Replaay, silly can be good!!

Just saw this on Saturday, rushed in mainly as am a huge Aishwariya Rai fan, and generally love her movies  (unless movies like Robot waste of her talent, or Mistress of Spices poor storyline which deviated from the novel and bad direction). Also wanted to see Akshay Kumar in flares and the 70′s hair.

I knew this was going to be a fluffy, feel good comedy and it was. Yes the story is convoluted, but the psychedelic trailer and songs should be warning enough that it will be anything but serious. It is a hindi version of the first Back To the Future without any of the annoying villains, bolder clothes, a stronger leading lady, more colour and catchy lively music. I love the song Chhan Ke Mohalla Sara where Mala first appears.

Akshay Kumar as Kishen is funny, there are no side splitting moments (like the chicken chase at the beginning of Singh is King), but this is one of his better comedies. The pseudo villain who can sing in two voices including a female soprano, is unique.

One worth watching in cinema for full enjoyment, expect it to be nonsensical and you won’t be disappointed.

I hate love stories

I hate love stories

Finally after a really long time a bollywood movie that can watch and enjoy with my daughter, thoroughly enjoyed watching  I Hate Luv Storys. The movie was an appropriate PG, no cringe worthy song sequences ( a-la 3 Idiots). It is well made, the story flows well, there are no over the top or unexplained sequences. The film is not overly melodramatic after the intermission either, not a big fan of Sonam Kapoor but she does well in this movie, nice chemistry between her and the male lead Imran Khan. The story is not stretched either just the correct length am guessing due to good screenplay and direction.

Yes this is not a dramatic or action packed saga, but for a change good to see a romantic comedy contain the correct content for once. It is advertised as a light hearted easy going film, and meets expectations. Good performances by the supporting cast, like the guy from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.

Overall well worth watching, and would buy this on DVD. Hope some more decent films coming out this year!!

Bollywood movies 2008

Bollywood movies 2008

My top five not in order:

  1. Jodhaa Akbar (Hrithik Roshan & Aishwariya with  a decent storyline, need I say more…)
  2. Black  & White (surprisingly good, Anil Kapoor is impressive)
  3. Singh is Kinng (loved this thoroughly!!, silly but good)
  4. Bachna Ae Haseeno (ok a little bit embarrassed to admit this.. but after the first cringeworthy 30 minutes it does get better, and yeah enjoyed it!)
  5. Am going to reserve for the soon to be released Ghajini… Aamir Khan rarely fails to impress

Worth watching

    200px-tashan_poster1

  • Dostana (Abishek Bacchan very believable, a good comedy, a few too many gratuitous shots of John Abraham’s chest, and watch out for the butt shot, also Bobby Deol not too bad in this)
  • Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (cute film with good music)
  • Krazzy 4 (comedy, Arshad Warsi is good)
  • Heroes (love Preity Zinta, hope she makes some more movies soon, wonder if Sunny Deol has super human strength in real life!! )
  • Sunday (am becoming an Ayesha Takia fan, she is quite good)
  • Tashan (lots of tacky moments, but also some great action scenes and fun to watch)

Some movies that want to see but have not yet:  Mission Istanbul, Kidnap and Rock On.

Movies that really looked forward to in 2008 but failed to impress

  • Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (ok loved the first half of the movie refreshing to see Shah Rukh Khan laugh at himself, but the 2nd half diverted back to the usual stodgy, male stereotypical, predictable stale stuff)
  • Yuvraaj (sooo boring, only good thing in it is Anil Kapoor who is brilliant and believable, and the beautiful Katrina Kaif, cannot think of one Salmaan Khan movie in which he acted well so  this was no suprise)
  • U, Me Aur Hum (love Kajol but this movie was a waste of her talent, there are some touching moments however quite irritating overall)
  • Kismat Konnection (hmm fell asleep  with eyes wide open 40 minutes into the movie, overhyped, good actors but  a tepid and slooow storyline, what a waste of time!!)
  • God Tussi Great Ho ( mediocre!)
  • Drona (bad fantasy sci-fi, could not be bothered to watch the entire film, almost as bad as KK)
  • Love Story 2050 ( am a big sci-fi fan, this is better than Drona, there are some great visual effects, and some good bits, but could have been much better, Priyanka Chopra is not bad, the pink teddy as her maid does not quite work)

Some past favourites in recent years,  not in order of preference:

  • Namaste London
  • Water (touching and worth watching)
  • Taare Zameen Par
  • Om Shanti Om
  • Aaja Nachle (favourite Madhuri Dixit movie, she just gets better, hope she makes some more soon!!)
  • Rang De Basanti
  • Fanaa

In love with Jack Black

In love with Jack Black

For anyone who has not watched Kung Fu Panda yet you’re missing out!! One of the cutest characters ever is Po the Panda, made extra special by Jack Black’s performance. Extremely funny, endearing and memorable. Saw it with my nine year old daughter, perhaps enjoyed this as much as her or more…

Not to mention have listened to the theme song together and sung it umpteen times.

Po

Everybody is Kung Fu fighting!
